World Happiness Day: A Package of Different Meanings

Before we reach onto the depth of World Happiness Day, its origin and the need to celebrate, I believe that its of utmost importance to understand what ‘happiness’ actually reflects. What does it mean to be happy? For everybody, it has different meanings because they have different prisms of perception. Attaining this state of mind has several paths that are marked as the favorite choices of people. However, how do you retain this feeling when a deluge of problems comes your way? On the occasion of the United Nations International Happiness Day, 20th March, 2022, it’s a culture to magnify this topic even further. Picturing it at a global level, the world has faced a myriad of problems: Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine Crisis and even the climatic changes. Therefore, the significance of this event this year entirely changes; it is about being perseverant and headstrong whilst shielding your happiness core from unprecedented situations. Let’s analyze how countries have maintained their happiness notwithstanding the distressed times.

Happiness quotient is a concept that measures the magnitude of happiness the individual has achieved. This is a key factor that could account for the standard of a happy mental health of country, just like the average income of a nation. The United Nations has deemed Finland as the nation with a happiness index standing at a high watermark. Why do you think so? Over the generations and rapid development of technology, people got engrossed in their gadgets; subsequently, cybercrime had skyrocketed while interpersonal skills had plummeted. Psychologically, venting out your fears, insecurities and anger (feelings that are inevitable) with other people can widen your aperture to grab happiness. Due to the frigid environment and slightly underdeveloped technology in Finland, the netizens are inclined to interact with each other whereas their books become their best friends whenever the blizzard is in the neighborhood. On the other hand, Afghanistan, a nation with the lowest happiness index, has had to witness huge internal as well as external terror. Amidst the pandemic, maintaining mental composure was definitely a challenge. Owing to the social distancing norms, interpersonal relations had been cut off although technology was there to keep the communication going. This adversely affected mental health care.

According to the 2020 suicide reports (the inception of the virus during that year), Lithuania has the highest suicide rates by 31.9% . Poor acknowledgement of mental health and surprisingly, climate as well! Global climatic change has become of growing concern due to which people are mentally affected. For instance, erratic monsoons have proved to be inimical to the agrarian interests and economy. A bitter cold weather wherein you have to stay at home all day can invite loneliness and acute boredom; apparently, all the sustainable development goals are intertwined.

Hence, the theme of this year’s celebration is: “Being Happy In Adversity.” Similarly, we should cheer up the citizens of Ukraine, who are miserable during the times of terror and curtailed freedom. Additionally, taking action to abate the intense climate change to dodge mental health complications. At an individual level as well, its all about equanimity and a happy mind, untrammelled by the ongoing dilemmas of life. So, think about any problem you have faced in life and the techniques adopted to keep yourself happy!
